Custom steel tubes for tram infrastructure in Amsterdam and Rotterdam

Solines supplied 25.5 tons of steel tubes for the foundation of the tram infrastructure in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The work is being carried out by BAM Infra OV on behalf of Vervoerregio Amsterdam. The tubes were custom-made, with specific attention to dimensions, welding, and logistical efficiency – essential for a stable foundation solution.

In Amsterdam, the project involved the construction of a temporary terminus for the Amsteltram (line 25) on the Parnassusweg near Amsterdam Zuid station. The pipes were directly integrated into the foundation of the central platform and the future turnaround facility. Given the limited space and time pressure at this central location, customized production and rapid unloading with crane trucks were chosen – essential for an efficient construction process in the summer of 2025.

In Rotterdam, the pipes were used in the redevelopment of the Hofplein area. For this project, fins were welded to both sides of the pipes to prevent rotation in the foundation. This technical solution enhances track stability in a dense urban environment.

The pipes were supplied in three diameters: 406.4 x 8.0 mm, 610.0 x 8.0 mm, and 813.0 x 8.0 mm, with lengths ranging from 3.5 to 6 meters. All processing – cutting and welding – was carried out by Solines Welding & Construction, ensuring the pipes were ready for immediate use on-site.
